THE FREEMASONS
They were prepared to fight, however, when the Germans, in accordance with Nazi theology, went gunning for the Freemasons. Again the impetus for this action came from the very top, from Hitler himself, who saw Freemasonry as a vehicle for Jewish ambitions to dominate the world. Here is Hitler in Mein Kampf talking of how the Jew went about his task:
‘In order to strengthen his political position, he directed his efforts towards removing the barrier of racial and civic discrimination which had hitherto hindered his advance at every turn. With characteristic tenacity he championed the cause of religious tolerance for this purpose and in the Freemason organisation, which had fallen completely into his hands, he found a magnificent weapon which helped him achieve his ends. Government circles as well as the higher sections of the political and commercial bourgeoisie fell prey to his plans through his manipulation of the Masonic net.’
Hitler was quite clear. Freemasonry was an international political network of Jewish and Jewish-inspired men whose aims and philosophy were wholly inimical to the survival of the Third Reich, and as such all Freemasons should be rounded up and imprisoned and their property looted.
As with the Jews, it did not take long for the Germans to begin their destructive work in the Islands. In January 1941 the Einsatzstab Reichsleiter Rosenberg, a species of hit-squad under the direction of the head Nazi philosopher Alfred Rosenberg, came to the Islands with the express purpose of dismantling the Masonic temples. Rosenberg’s men took all the ornate Masonic regalia, entire libraries, rooms full of furniture, even the carpets, from the Temples in Jersey and Guernsey and transported it all back to Germany, to Berlin where it was put on show for the Berliners to gawp at and learn what a threat Freemasonry was to the Fatherland.
These Masonic riches were never returned to their rightful owners. They couldn’t be because they were destroyed in one of the hundreds of terrible bombing raids on the German capital which began in such deadly earnest in 1942.
But the Germans were not content with just this bit of pillaging. They wanted more – a lot more. In the November of 1941 an order was issued to sequester all the assets of the Freemasons. This was a step too far. Victor Carey was roused to action to forestall this act of grand larceny. Colonel Knackfuss had informed Coutanche and Carey that:
‘According to a decree of the Military Commander in France, the property of the Freemasons’ Lodges is to be liquidated.’
Guernsey’s Lieutenant-Governor, Chief Mason and Provincial Grand Master, Bailiff Victor Carey, consulted Alexander Coutanche over in Jersey. He suggested rather cleverly that the best way to protect the threatened assets would be for the Masons to transfer them voluntarily to the States, that is to say to the treasuries of Jersey and Guernsey where, re-titled as government assets, they would be safe from thieving German hands. There was a distinct air of positive resistance about the whole Masonic issue.
